I've had a lot on my mind for the past few months. Needless to say that a lot of stress has been building up so I found myself spending most of my limited free time doing activities that helped me burn it away. I honestly gave serious consideration on canceling this project. I made some poor choices with a few things that are making it harder to make the game the way I wanted it to be and it would be much simpler for me to move onto the next project I have in mind. In my current situation, a simple solution is very appealing to me right now.
But I read the comments on this blog and was moved by several of them. I've decided to finish this project and use what I learned to make my next one what this should have been. I've even managed to schedule (omg!) set times throughout the week that I will be dedicating to working on The Verse.
Long story short, progress is being made consistently again. Hopefully I'm over the hump of inactivity. It's not going to be quite as grand or epic as originally planned but it will be completed! :)
Edit: I've put up a poll about how much time I should put into The Verse. I'm redesigning my personal gameplan and would like to know your opinions.
Very glad to read this :)
ReplyDeleteI have really enjoyed this game. Your writing as well as the scenarios you've presented so far are quite a bit above what you usually see in most rags games, so I'm looking forward to seeing more.
Also, if RL gives you trouble, knee it in the crotch. It's almost never as bad as it seems at the time.
(Now dropping "gd".)
DeleteI just kept rereading that and that just sounds so very painful... XD
Sorry for my bad English here. English is not my first language.
ReplyDeleteAt first i very want to say - thank you for creating "The Verse". It is the most atmospheric IF-game in my life. Seriously. I want to tell you more compliments, but i just can't do it, and i am sorry for that.
And at second - i'm very happy to see, what the project is alive. I just can't wait to hear this angelic music again. I understand, what it is kinda egoistic - ask you to do something, than you have real problems; but i just can't don't wait and don't want.
With my best wishes and heartfelt admiration - William Ashenden =)
I don't care how long it takes you to finish this; I'll patiently wait.
ReplyDeleteLife takes us on roller coaster rides at times, some of them really horrifying, but as long as we keep pushing on we tend to overcome our problems. If that wasn't true I wouldn't be sitting here now, 'nuff said.
This.
Delete+1 to Faia. Btw, glad you're sitting with us to enjoy this game by our lovely Asmina. Also glad to hear that Alako's game is back on the wagon too.

I hope you don't mind the plug, Asmina.
Hope to get the whole thing of course but if your motivation ends up lacking just put it on hold and start your new project, and then just see what happens.
ReplyDeleteEither way I have immensely enjoyed what little there have been so will look forward to whatever you bring.
Above all else I just hope you're doing OK. :)
ReplyDeleteJust found your game. Writing is very good. Pacing very good. I would love to see you put more content in, as the world and the tone are perfect!
ReplyDeleteIt's okay. We all have this kind of moment, I hope that things are getting better for you.
ReplyDeleteConsidering the game itself, I wanted to address this : " I made some poor choices with a few things that are making it harder to make the game the way I wanted it to be and it would be much simpler for me to move onto the next project I have in mind. In my current situation, a simple solution is very appealing to me right now."
Frankly, it may seem like a good idea, but it isn't. You will learn new things with each project you do, and if you decide to cancel them so that you can use this newly acquired experience to make a new and better project, you will just keep on making new projects and never actually finish anything.
So yeah, it's good that you choose to finish this one. However, I feel like the "should I shorten it, cut some content, or do everything as planned ?" question should be yours. If you force yourself because of a poll, then you may get sick of what you're working on and drop it.
With this said, Im looking forward your next release, and I wish that life will get a bit easier on you.
The polls don't dictate my actions, they simply let me know what the fans want. This is my project :P
DeleteHurray! keep up your good spirit
ReplyDeleteStick to it Asmina, you'll do fine, If you need aid with something, i wouldnt mind pitching in in some way.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the closer you can stay to your original vision, the better your result will be and the more you will learn.
ReplyDeleteHOWEVER, depending on the issues, you may have to cut some things. That can be OK.
Ideally, though, if you cut something it will be because it does not feel like a fun part of your game rather than because you feel blocked from achieving that thing.
Also... I am sure all of us will be happy to give you tons of advice, if you ever want any!!! (Maybe some of it will even be relevant and helpful? It could happen!)
Please do not burn out, though - if you can pace yourself? That would be good, yes?
Glad to see you're back into it!
ReplyDeleteRegardless of the direction you take, if you need help with pic hunting or anything like that, I'd be happy to help.
I know that feeling. A lot of things happened at the same time in my life too.
ReplyDeleteBut, unlike me, you actually have something that can help you work through that. If you feel like you need to drop something to improve the quality of the game, do it. But like what was said before, try to keep to your original vision. Changing it halfway through would only make an even greater muddled mess.
Even if it takes a while, I'm sure that most of us here would hate to see you drop the project, or make it too short. It's one of the better RAGS games I've seen at the moment, and it has tons of potential. Not to mention, the scenes are sexy and fun as well.
Just remember, keep at it, and you have a lot of fans that want to see you finish the game. Your next project will be better, of course, but like what was also said, that project will help make your next project better, too. There will be things you do in that game that you'll think 'Why the hell did I do that?' But if you made a new game every time that happened... well, then all you're left with is a bunch of incomplete projects. I think it's better to make one complete game that gets better over time (and you can even go back and change previous parts with your new knowledge if you can)than a bunch of incomplete ones.
However, that's just my two cents. I never claim that I'm the smartest person in the world (far from it), but I did just want to share my thoughts.
Best of luck to you.
