Ok so maybe not one whole year but pretty darn close and eleven and a half months just didn't have the same ring to it. Longer post warning: Skip to end for summary.
I have been MIA for quite some time now and for that I honestly am sorry. About eight months ago I was in a bad car accident. A drunk driver in his big pickup truck smashed into a cute little mini-coop I was in. It was really bad. Thankfully I survived (obviously) but I still haven't recovered fully. It's difficult for me to type while using my right hand. If I type for more than 20 minutes or so, my hand starts to hurt. Considering The Verse is a text based game, I decided months ago to let the project go.
But even still I would occasionally check the blog and different websites it was linked from. Even almost a year later people are checking for updates and sending me emails asking if I'm still working on it. I hate goodbyes so I was really hoping ya'll would move onto the next big shiny thing but a lot of you just haven't. I'm simply amazed that so many of you are still even thinking about my little game. So yesterday I finally responded to one of those emails to ask one question: Why?
That "crazed fan" (his words, not mine!) managed to respond in such a way that just hit home in so many ways. He reminded me about what I wanted this game to become and what it meant to me. Hell I can remember a bunch of nights in that damned hospital bed thinking about my silly little game and how much I wished I had a stupid stimpack. I survived a life-threatening crash and I was thinking about a stupid adult text adventure game. How retarded does that make me? So after I finished talking to that "crazed fan" I was determined to finish my game even if I have to do the whole damned thing left handed.
That being said, I contacted another author who is going to be co-authoring The Verse with me. Co-authoring is putting it mildly as he's most likely going to be the one physically writing most of it while I "direct" what happens. He was actually the first fan I responded to since the accident as he was asking for my advice on his game. He let me "alpha" test his game and I was very impressed with his work. He's definitely a better writer than me and muuuuuuch better at programming than me. I have very high hopes with us working together on this project.
I will be making update posts here on our progress and I will make a set schedule for it. I'm not sure if it will be weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly yet but there will be a schedule. Once we have some more time to really review what we already have and what needs to be done, I'll make a post on our immediate game plan.
So to sum it up: I'm working with a co-author and we are working on The Verse reboot. I will make another post most likely within a week about our gameplan and exactly how things will progress.

It's good to have you back Asmina, Get well soon too!
ReplyDeleteI wish you a speedy recovery and many great nights of writing. I am so glad to know you are working on this game again. It is one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteStupid drunken drivers... I can't muster enough hate in 1 sentence for those morons.
ReplyDelete--
It was such a shame when this game was canned, but also understandable. This was one of my favourites! Is there any news of which engine you will be using? I must say I was Pro Rags based "The Verse" =)
We are currently figuring that out but it looks like we'll be using flash. The goal is to emulate the Rags interface though so hopefully it will have the same feel to it.
DeleteHave you seen QSP? A load of games for it started showing up on TFGS recently, mostly in Russian. It's a weird mixture of html, java, C and BASIC on the inside, but it seems to do its thing pretty well. Players get to drag parts of the display around, turnign them into windows and merging them back into the main window, at will, so they're not stuck with a default layout.

I did take a look but I think the feel of the game will be better using flash. Plus I really don't want to make anyone download any third party program to play my game.
DeleteI know I know flash it technically a third party program, shush you.
glad you've been able to continue on a project we all enjoyed! good luck with the reboot
ReplyDeleteIs there a way to avoid the rape in the first duel?
ReplyDeleteWin :)
DeleteYou can ? Should have persevered then . Btw just discovered your game , and your trouble . Hope your recovery from here on is a swift one and you have no permanent damage , also might be nice to know if the asshat that did that to you got his ass whooped by a judge .
ReplyDeleteIt can be a very difficult fight or a very easy one depending on the traits you select.
DeleteHoly shit it is good to hear from you... and holy fucking shit I am so sorry about what happened, and even more relieved to hear that you're doing well! Never been hit yet while in a car *crosses fingers* but I know a friend who was hit by a drunk driver. Anyways I'm rooting for your recovery, so get better and I'm eagerly anticipating what you have in store!
ReplyDeleteYAY!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're OK! I do hope your road to recovery is a quick one and I'm glad you want to persevere, Asmina and another author, this game is going to be better that ever. I'm still around if you need help with photoshop. I'll fire an email your way in case you've lost it. Plus I still have all of those backdrops.
ReplyDeleteGreat news! Love the game!
ReplyDeleteRock on SuperChick! I'd still be happy to help again if you like.
ReplyDeleteHow can I say no to my ellipsis killer? ;)
DeleteAnd semi-colon inserter; wait, that sounded dirtier than it was supposed to.
