Back in action!

First week's progress:  Nadda!  Bleh!  It seemed like every time I sat down to work on it, actual work decided it wanted my attention.  I so look forward to the day I hit the lottery and don't have to work anymore.

Second week:  Much better!  My co-author and I figured out a pretty good schedule for us to get together and work on the game.  Assuming nothing gets in the way (I'm look at you, Mr. Work!) we'll be working on it pretty steadily throughout the next few weeks.  After that we're going to see if it's working and change as needed.

The plan is to continue with the reboot of the game but I'm not going to be switching over to anime-style drawn characters.  Like it or not, the style of images is part of what makes The Verse what it is and I can't change it.  I also considered ditching images all together and focus more on text, but again it just wouldn't feel the same.  Though thankfully I pretty much have most of the background pictures I'll need, (InsaneBrain ftw!) and hunting for the actual character images is much much easier.

We pretty much threw away the coding I did before my "break".  Starting fresh is good, especially when my co-author is a much better programmer than I am.  I kid you not when I say something that took me about 250 lines of code, he did in 28 lines.  Twenty-fucking-eight lines.  A not so small part of me was crying when I saw that.  So what took me a little better than a month to do, I imagine will only take us about a week to catch up to.  That is of course assuming things don't get in the way.  Somehow my co-author thinks he's getting the better part of this deal.  "Learning" from me how to tell a better story.  Personally I think he's crazy or just trying to be nice.  I'm gunna go with the first.

I also think I'm going to change a few of the gameplay mechanics since we're re-writing the engine.  Add things like carrying capacity, inventory space, ammunition limits, ect.  Give Kaylee magazine clips instead of letting her backpack carry 16 gazillion bullets.  The basic combat and stats will remain mostly the same as I don't want to change the feel of the game.

All in all I'm excited to be back on the project and am really looking forward to how it turns out.  The one thing that really surprised me is how everyone who was helping me before is still willing to help me again, even after my disappearance.  Thank you :)

  1. Wait. Give her "magazine clips" how? Springy clips on her webbing that hold magazines?

Just, er, don't go using "clip" and "magazine" as if they're interchangeable.

Some people can get ... sensitive about it.

If a GM says I'm changing the clip on my weapon, I sometimes assume it's been magically turned into an M1 Garand. Better than a .380 Bersa, not as good as an H&K G3.

If you're looking for stats on guns, world.guns.ru is a fairly good source of numbers like rate of fire and magazine capacity. You can look up the round on wikipedia to get its muzzle energy or use https://billstclair.com/energy.html if it's on there and use that for its damage rating, but be careful not to get your ft-lbs and your Joules mixed up.

Also bear in mind that longer barrels allow a round to impart more energy to the bullet, e.g. the same 5.56mm ammo at 950 m/s with 1811J from an HK33A2 or at 750m/s with 1129J from the short-barreled HK53 or 9mm at 400m/s with 644J from an Uzi or 328 m/s with 433J from a compact pistol. Bill St. Clair lists the .45 auto as 532J. Yes, Valve, the Uzi should actually hit harder that the pistols. No, they shouldn't hit 50% harder than it. No, EA, the .45 does not hit 7 times harder than a 9mm.

If you put in shotguns, they tend to hit an area with a diameter 1/25 of the distance to target, but it's measured from some way in front of the muzzle.

At 50m, which is outside the "effective" range for a pistol because it's hard to hit someone in a hurry at 50m with a pistol, a load of #3 buck will put 18 pellets into an area about as high as a man. Odds are you'll hit him, but not very hard at that range with small pellets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pIuUrjUIyQ

At "pimp in your face" or "intruder in the hotel" ranges, though, it'll put something like 3000J into a very small area and make an ugly mess.

    .....

The RAGS version made mention of concealed carry. Maybe Kaylee should have a "concealable" capacity and a larger "rather obvious" capacity, so she can walk around with 12 full magazines for the SCAR, 12 for the Taurus, 2 stimpacks, 4 litres of drinking water, a day's food, a thermite grenade and a WP grenade but everyone'll know it and if she wants to be unobtrusive she'll have to settle for the Taurus and 2 spare magazines ... or less, depending what she's wearing.

In some outfits I'm sure I could hide a pistol under one arm, two spare magazines under the other and four more across the back of the waist: http://image.dhgate.com/albu_272897971_00-1.0x0/new-blazer-newest-women-blazer-business-suit.jpg

    In others, maybe nothing: http://www.designerdesirables.com/images/products/zoom/1325846529-18503500.jpg

... or just the pistol with its 1 magazine in an inner-thigh holster: http://images.asos-media.com/inv/media/3/9/5/1/1861593/navy/image1xl.jpg

Capacity could also depend on traits. If you offer "strong" and "athletic" as two separate traits, being strong could increase the thresholds at which she starts to suffer reduced dodge skill, lose stamina, be unable to run et cetera due to weight and being athletic could decrease her stamina loss rate or just give her more stamina.

Is a visible arsenal asking for trouble or repelling it? Is it making her more attractive or less? http://i.imgur.com/zipuu.jpg

    1. "Some people can get ... sensitive about it." Yeah, apparently so lol.

I'll be sure to look back at this comment before I implement any "magazine clips" ;)

  2. My pleasure. It just goes to show how good The Verse is that people who were helping before are helping again. You know where to find me. :)

  3. Magazine Clips, Asamina, you're killing me slowly D:

In any case, yeah compacting 250 to 28 can be a thing. Good luck on the project!

  4. Will there be any pregnancy or risk of it in the game? thats one of my fave fetishes

    1. It's actually one of my fav as well, but I don't think there will be much of it in this game. Story reasons.

    2. maybe you could write it like shes worried about it but don't have it happen in the story

    3. I love the pregnancy risk fetish too. You see so many games out there where the heroine doesn't care about having unprotected sex with anyone. Let alone think about the consequences.

  5. Gotta say, I am excited that I got into this game just in time for a complete overhaul. Quick question: Are there any plans for when a downloadable version comes out or is it still too early to tell?

  6. I was worried about the move from Rags suite to Flash. I am no longer worried! The flash interface is great =)
